* German firm Siemens Energy, together with German car maker Porsche and a number of other international companies, has unveiled the construction of a green industrial plant in Punta Arenas, a city in the Chilean Patagonia region. The “pioneering project” will support the production of virtually CO2-neutral fuel (eFuel) derived from green hydrogen and is expected to produce around 130,000 litres of eFuel by 2022, with production capacity expanded to 55m litres by 2024 and 550m litres by 2026. Dubbed the Haru Oni project, the initiative “takes advantage of the perfect climatic conditions for wind energy in Magallanes province in southern Chile”, to produce eFuel using low-cost green wind power. Sports car manufacturer Porsche has announced that it will be using the eFuel in its own vehicles, pledging that the company will have “a neutral CO2 balance sheet as early as 2030”. Construction of the plant began last week, with production expected to begin in mid-2022. According to Chile’s minister of energy, Juan Carlos Jobet, the success of green hydrogen projects such as this one in Chile will be “essential to combating climate change on a global scale”.
