In brief: Mexico’s formal sector showing more signs of recovery

* Mexico’s social security institute (IMSS) has released new figures which show that a record 128,900 formal jobs were created in August this year, an increase of 0.6% compared with July and a 4.2% increase on the number of formal jobs created in August of the previous year. These figures mean that between January and August 2021, 647,091 total jobs were created in Mexico’s formal sector, with the transport & communications sector seeing the greatest annual increase in jobs creation (9.3%). Despite this record increase in formal jobs creation continuing the recovery of the formal employment sector, the 20.4m formal jobs registered in Mexico by the IMSS as of August this year still fall short of the 20.6m registered in February 2020, before the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic hit.
