In brief: Guatemala receives record remittances

* Guatemala’s central bank (Banguat) has released new figures which show remittances to the country totalled US$1.39bn in August 2021 – a new monthly record. So far in 2021 remittance inflows totalled US$9.7bn, up from the US$7bn received in the same period in 2020. Remittances totalled US$11.3bn in 2020 – a new annual record, accounting for roughly 14% of GDP. The 2020 figure is up from US$10.5bn in 2019.
