In brief: Brazil’s automobile production remains steady

* Brazil’s national association of automobile manufacturers (Anfavea) has released its production figures for August, which show that 164,000 units were manufactured in the country that month, a 0.3% increase on the number of vehicles produced in July. Although this is down 21.9% on August 2020 production levels and the lowest figure for the month of August since 2003, the Anfavea noted that “logistical effort” kept production levels steady compared with previous months, despite the shortage of semiconductors which has impacted automobile production globally and led 11 factories in Brazil to partially or completely suspend their activities throughout August. The Anfavea president, Luiz Carlos Moraes, noted that “this semiconductors situation brings a huge level of uncertainty to the industry’s performance for the rest of the year”, saying that this time last year, as the country pulled through the first impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, demand was unpredictable but production strong, whereas this year, production is struggling to keep up with the recovery of demand.
