In brief: Brazil’s beef exports to China suspended over sanitary scare

* Brazil’s agriculture ministry has confirmed that two atypical cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as the mad cow disease, have been identified at meat-packing plants in the states of Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais. Brazilian authorities say they have passed on the information to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), while stressing that trade should not be impacted and Brazil is expected to keep its status as a country with negligible risk of BSE, as atypical BSE does not carry the same risks as classical BSE. Nevertheless, due to the terms of a sanitary protocol signed between Brazil and China, beef exports to the Asian giant have been temporarily suspended until Chinese authorities conclude a review of the situation. China is the principal buyer of Brazilian beef, with Brazil’s beef exports to China totalling a record US$3.1bn this year so far.
