In brief: Unemployment falls in Colombia

* Colombia’s national statistics department (Dane) has released employment figures showing that the unemployment rate stood at 14.3% in July, representing approximately 3.5m people. This represents a year-on-year decline of 5.9 percentage points (and 1.07m people) on the 20.2% unemployment rate recorded in July 2020. Seasonally adjusted unemployment decreased by 1.1% compared with the previous month. Meanwhile, underemployment stood at 34.2%, although no basis of comparison was provided for the previous year or month. Dane’s director, Juan Daniel Oviedo, said that the figures offer “statistically significant” evidence that Colombia is emerging from the economic slump induced by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, noting that from May-July the employed population reached 20.7m – a 16.2% increase compared with the same period last year.
