MEXICO: Taking a radically different tack in fight against arms trafficking

The Mexican government has taken the unprecedented step of filing lawsuits in the US courts against some of the US’s largest firearms manufacturers and sellers. The move is a part of a new strategy for combating the illegal trafficking of high-powered firearms from the US into Mexico, which for years has fuelled the rampant violence linked to organised criminal activity. Whether this litigation strategy will be successful remains in doubt. Yet it could produce negative unforeseen consequences for Mexico’s security forces.
