BOLIVIA: Opposition conditions Áñez trial on judicial reform

Bolivia’s centre-right opposition Comunidad Ciudadana (CC) proposed an “accord” with the left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government for judicial reform on 23 August. CC, which is led by former president Carlos Mesa (2003-2005), called for the replacement of Attorney General Wilfredo Chávez and for changes to the election process for his office and for high court magistrates as a condition for supporting the trial of former president Jeanine Áñez. The proposal was flatly rejected by Justice Minister Iván Lima, who slammed it as an attempted “second coup” to remove key figures in the judiciary and attorney general’s office.
