VENEZUELA: Arreaza replaced in cabinet reshuffle

Jorge Arreaza, who had served as Venezuela’s bellicose foreign minister since 2017 and was one of the most well-known figures in President Nicolás Maduro’s government, was replaced in a cabinet reshuffle on 19 August. Into his shoes will step Félix Plasencia, a career diplomat who can be expected to provide a less combative face to the foreign ministry while the current negotiations with the political opposition continue in Mexico [WR-21-33]. A number of other high-profile ministers were also replaced in the shake-up, but, unlike Arreaza’s substitution, these were widely anticipated given that they are set to participate in the upcoming regional and municipal elections.
