* Mexico’s national council for the evaluation of social development policy (Coneval), a government body, has released a new report that states that the number of workers living below the poverty line (working poor people) has decreased in the second quarter of the year compared with the first quarter. In a statement, Coneval said that the number of working poor people has decreased by 0.9 percentage points, from 39.4% of the population to 38.5%, within this period. Coneval attributed the decrease to factors including a 2.9% increase in real labour income, a 3.1% increase in the nominal wage bill, and a 4.9% increase in the number of people employed. However, the report also shows that the working poor rate in the first quarter of 2021 is 2.9 percentage points higher than in the first quarter of 2020, when it was 35.6%, suggesting that the proportion of working poor has yet to fall below the levels registered prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
