In brief: DR’s Abinader claims job recovery

* The Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader has said that as of July, the country had recovered 714,551 of jobs lost due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and that his government was working to create “a million jobs” over the next few years. According to the latest (21 July) report by the Dominican Republic’s central bank (BCRD), in the first quarter of 2021, a total of 4.41m people were employed, 192,491 fewer than in the same period in 2020. However, this is an improvement on the previous three quarters: in the fourth quarter of 2020, 301,588 fewer people were employed compared with the same quarter in 2019; in the third quarter of 2020, 335,732; and in the second quarter, 410,367.
