PANAMA: Environmental groups on the alert over mining push

Mining has long been a fraught issue in Panama. The announcement in May by the government led by President Laurentino Cortizo of plans to promote the sector to revive the economy has put environmental groups like Centro de Incidencia Ambiental (Ciam) back on the alert. These groups not only question the lack of transparency surrounding the plans but are calling for a moratorium on metallic mining in the country altogether.
