In brief: Peru’s employment recovers but remains below pre-pandemic levels

* Peru’s national statistics institute (Inei) has released its latest figures on employment, which show that 16.84m people were employed in the second quarter of the year, while 5.5% of the economically active population was unemployed, equating to 976,300 people. The employed population increased by 52.6% compared with Q2 2020, when much of Peru’s economy was closed due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. However, the employed population remained 0.9% below the pre-pandemic levels recorded in Q2 2019. Furthermore, Inei reported that the number of Peruvians in adequate employment in June 2021 fell by 11.1% year-on-year, amounting to 7.3m workers. The under-employed population rose by 19.1% in the same period. The strongest rebound in employment was along the coast (a 72.8% increase; 3.74m) and among workers aged 14-24 (71.7%; 1.16m). The sectors with the largest year-on-year increases in employment were construction (223.9%), mining (127.8%), and fishing (116.7%), whilst employment in agriculture fell by 1.1% in the same period.
