PERU: Plan to tackle inadequate and informal housing

In a move described as “historic” by Peru’s former housing, construction & sanitation minister, Solangel Fernández (2020-2021), on 14 July the government approved the national housing and urbanism policy, designed to tackle the Andean country’s longstanding shortage of adequate homes. The plan outlines a housing roadmap to 2030 that promotes the construction of neighbourhoods with greater access to public services and a more sustainable urban environment. In doing so, it takes “great steps forward in helping the most vulnerable families to access high quality, dignified accommodation”, according to an official press release, which stated that new homes will suit climactic, social and territorial conditions, and that those in informal housing will be offered technical support to meet planning regulations.
