* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures on retail trade, which show that the volume of sales fell 1.7% between May and June this year. This negative monthly variation comes after two months of positive results in the retail sector, although in year-on-year terms, retail sales grew 6.3% in June.
“The June results break two months of growth. Despite this drop, the retail sector still finds itself above February 2020 levels, that is to say, before the [coronavirus] pandemic”, Ibge research manager,
Cristiano Santos, notes. The Ibge’s report also highlights a 2.3% monthly drop in the volume of sales for the ‘expanded retail sector’ in June, which includes vehicles, motorbikes, parts and pieces, and construction material.
