In brief: Guatemala exporters’ association raises forecasts

* The Guatemalan exporters’ association (Agexport), a private sector lobby group, has raised its growth projections for the export sector for the year from 6.3% to 13%. This follows the latest figures from Guatemala’s central bank (Banguat) which showed the country’s exports totalled US$6.69bn in the first six months of the year, representing annual growth of 20.8%. The textiles and clothing sector, which accounted for US$929m of exports in the first half of the year, was the fastest growing (up 35.4% year-on-year), while manufacturing, which accounted for US$2.6bn of exports, was up 27.5%. Agexport reported earlier this year that Guatemala’s exports totalled US$11bn in 2020, a 1.4% fall on the previous year as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
