* Costa Rica’s national statistics institute (Inec) has released its latest figures on unemployment, which show that the unemployment rate totalled 18.1% in the April-June rolling quarter. This is up from 17.7% in the immediately preceding rolling quarter, ending in May 2021, but represents a 5.9 percentage-point decrease on the same period last year. The Inec’s report shows a high gender imbalance in unemployment, with a 24.6% unemployment rate amongst women compared with just 13.7% for men. With the employed population totalling 1.97m in Q2 2021 (up by 224,000 compared with a year earlier), Costa Rica’s employment rate totalled 48.7%.
