In brief: Poverty rises in Mexico

* Mexico’s national council for the evaluation of social development policy (Coneval) has released its latest report on multidimensional poverty, which shows that the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic led to 3.8m people falling into poverty. The number of Mexicans living in poverty rose from 51.9m in 2018, representing 41.9% of the population, to 55.7m in 2020, corresponding to 43.9% of the population. Meanwhile, the population living in extreme poverty grew by 2.1m, from 8.7m in 2018 to 10.8m in 2020, now representing 8.5% of the population. According to Coneval, 19 of Mexico’s 32 states witnessed an increase in poverty while 26 saw extreme poverty rise.
