MEXICO: First national popular consultation flops

The first legally sanctioned national popular consultation to be held in Mexico has backfired on the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The ostensible objective of the consultation asking the public whether previous government officials should be investigated for suspected wrongdoing was to remind the public of the corruption of past governments and provide a political boost, especially after the disappointing results for the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) in June’s midterm federal legislative elections [WR-21-23], by showing that it can still mobilise the electorate. But only a small proportion of voters took part.
