In brief: Industrial production stalls in Brazil

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures on the industrial sector, which show that industrial production grew 12% year-on-year in June. However, in monthly terms, industrial production saw a null variation of 0.0% in June compared with May. Ibge research coordinator, André Macedo, explains that industrial production returned to pre-coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic levels in May, but that a majority of industrial activities registered a negative performance in June, signs of a lack of dynamism in the sector which reflects the ongoing effects of the pandemic. Macedo cites the sector as suffering from a slowdown in the pace of production, difficulties in getting hold of raw materials, and an increase in production costs – ongoing problems all largely resulting from Covid-19 restriction measures, which continue to be felt.
