MEXICO: Third wave raises questions over normalisation plans

After it appeared that the coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic in Mexico had subsided, the country is suffering a major new wave of infections. This could derail the attempts by the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to advance its plans for a return to normality with the next big step towards this involving the reopening of the country’s schools for in-person learning. López Obrador has been adamant that the reopening of schools must take place on 30 August come what may. But the high risk that this could exacerbate the epidemiological situation is putting pressure on the government to revise its plans.
