CUBA: US responds to crackdown

The US government led by President Joe Biden last week slapped economic sanctions on Cubas defence minister, General Álvaro López Miera, and the Cuban interior ministrys special national brigade, also known as the Boinas Negras (Black Berets). These are the first measures by the Biden administration, which has come under mounting pressure to respond to the crackdown by the Cuban government led by President Miguel Díaz-Canel on those involved in the large-scale recent protests [WR-21-29]. With Biden warning that this is just the beginning”, the sanctions again illustrate that despite his 2020 campaign pledge to try to reverse the hard-line policies of his predecessor Donald Trump (2017-2021), his government is unlikely to soften its stance on Cuba any time soon.
