In brief: Colombia and Switzerland renew sustainable development agreement

* Colombia and Switzerland have announced the second phase of their 2016 ‘Colombia + Competitiva’ (C+C) bilateral agreement, which aims to promote sustainable growth in Colombia in four sectors: cocoa, coffee, tourism, and natural ingredients. To this end, Switzerland has invested CHF14m (US$15.2m) which Colombia’s commerce, industry and tourism minister, María Ximena Lombana, said would “strengthen the internationalisation and competitiveness of value chains,” creating jobs and aiding Colombia’s economic recovery from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Lombana said that the first phase of the C+C, carried out between 2016-2020, had increased Colombia’s competitiveness in sustainable industries at the regional level, and that the second phase would help the country to “conquer” larger international consumer markets. Switzerland’s ambassador to Colombia, Yvonne Baumann, said that the agreement sought to “think of social, economic and environmental agendas holistically,” and expressed her hope that it would “contribute to a reduction in inequality and in the construction of peace.”
