Green light for Eletrobras privatisation

After earlier senate approval, on 21 June Brazil’s federal chamber of deputies voted through a bill to privatise the state-owned electricity company, Eletrobras. The company is Latin America’s largest power utility. Economy Minister Paulo Guedes says the divestment could ultimately raise up to R$100bn (US$19bn) for the public purse, making it the largest-ever Brazilian privatisation, and helping to lower future energy prices. But there are still some big risks to overcome.
