The western
Venezuelan state of Apure has been embroiled in conflict since late March, when clashes erupted between the dissident 10
th Front of the disbanded Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group and the Venezuelan military. Limited information has indicated that the army is struggling to regain control, with the violence threatening to spill into other states. Some rare good news for the Nicolás Maduro government came on 31 May with the freeing of eight soldiers held hostage by the 10
th Front for over a month, but this was dampened by accusations that the military ceded territory in exchange for their release. We begin this July edition of the
Latin American Regional Report: Andean Group by discussing the trajectory of this conflict.
