In brief: Brazil’s Ceará to build desalination plant

* Camilo Santana, the governor of the state of Ceará in the Brazilian Northeast, has announced the launch of the construction of a desalination plant in the state’s capital, Fortaleza, which will be Brazil’s largest sea water desalination plant. The plant will be constructed at the Praia do Futuro in Fortaleza, with pipelines to store the desalinated water in the Morro Santa Teresa and Aldeota reservoirs. Due to be operational in 2025, the plant will have a processing capacity of 1m3/second and will increase water availability in Fortaleza and its metropolitan region by 12%, benefiting 720,000 people. The construction of the plant will be carried out through a public-private partnership, with the Águas de Fortaleza consortium responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the plant’s systems and for investing R$500m (US$95.8m) into the project, while Cagece, the state’s water and sanitation company, has committed to purchasing all the treated water “to attend to the population and guarantee that there are no water shortages in the capital”, Santana said. The expectation is that the water treated at the plant will also be used for agriculture.
