MEXICO: Choosing López Obrador’s successor

Mexico’s foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, confirmed on 13 July that he would be running for president in 2024 after meeting to discuss the matter with friends and associates. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador ignited the debate long ahead of time last week when he mentioned six possible successors, including the mayor of Mexico City (CDMX), Claudia Sheinbaum, to run on the ticket of the ruling leftist Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) when he stands aside after his six-year term.
