In brief: Argentina to supply gas to Chile

* The Argentine government has announced that it will supply additional natural gas to Chile to help it overcome its current energy crisis stemming from a shortage of the fuel in Chile. This shortage has been exacerbated by the storms that have hit Chile’s coast in recent days and have prevented vessels carrying natural gas shipments from reaching ports in Chile. This prompted Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera to ask his Argentine counterpart, Alberto Fernández, for help. A statement from Argentina’s energy secretariat said that President Fernández has authorised additional exports of gas to Chile to help its neighbour “mitigate and overcome” its crisis. The statement says that the Fernández government is currently analysing Argentina’s own gas needs to determine how much it can supply to Chile. However, it noted that thanks to the launch last year of Plan Gas.Ar, through which the Fernández government has been promoting domestic gas production, Argentina has been able to cover domestic demand and accumulate surplus gas reserves, which has allowed it to approve the export of 6m cubic metres of gas to Chile between October and April 2022.
