VENEZUELA: Fears of long-term conflict in Apure

The western Venezuelan state of Apure has been embroiled in conflict since late March, when clashes erupted between the dissident 10th Front of the disbanded Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group and the Venezuelan military (FANB). Limited information has indicated that the FANB is struggling to regain control, with the violence threatening to spill into other states. Some rare good news for the Nicolás Maduro government came on 31 May with the freeing of eight soldiers held hostage by the 10th Front for over a month, but this was dampened by accusations that the military ceded territory in exchange for their release.
