National security issues come back to the fore in Paraguay

Although Paraguay is still grappling with a wave of coronavirus (Covid-19) infections that has led to a sharp rise in deaths, national security issues came back into focus this week following two significant developments. The first was the visit to the country of the US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland. The second was the drafting of a new plan to be presented to congress that aims to strengthen the country’s capacity to control and monitor national airspace and riverine ports.
