BRAZIL: Under investigation, environment minister quits

Ricardo Salles, Brazil’s controversial environment minister, unexpectedly tendered his resignation on 23 June. Salles played no small part in the current rolling back of environmental safeguards and protection efforts in Brazil, and his departure was welcomed in environmental circles and beyond – but a change in environmental policy by the government led by President Jair Bolsonaro remains unlikely.
