PERU: Peru’s electoral tensions reach boiling point

Nearly three weeks on from Peru’s 6 June second round run-off election between Pedro Castillo and Keiko Fujimori, the absence of an official winner has ramped up tensions on the streets, in courtrooms, and in the armed forces. With the situation appearing increasingly combustible, outgoing President Francisco Sagasti made a televised address on 18 June to denounce former members of the military who have called for a coup in the event that Castillo, the candidate for the far-left Perú Libre, be declared the winner.
