In brief: Panama’s tax take exceeds expectations

* Publio de Gracia, the director of Panama’s tax authority (DGI), has announced that Panama’s tax take in the year up to May totalled US$2.16bn, up 12% on the amount registered over the same period in 2020 and an increase of US$466m on the amount budgeted for the period. However, De Gracia was clear that this did not mean that tax take had returned to levels registered prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Among other things tax revenue has been affected by measures taken by the government to help those affected by the economic impact of the pandemic, such as a general tax amnesty which, in April, President Laurentino Cortizo extended until 31 August 2021.
