In brief: Mexico’s gov’t highlights rise in FDI ranking

* Mexico’s deputy minister for foreign trade, Luz María de la Mora, has highlighted Mexico’s improved ranking as a recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the latest World Investment Report 2021 by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). De la Mora highlighted that Mexico rose five places to ninth in the world last year, up from 14 in 2019, receiving the most FDI of any country in Latin America. According to the report, Mexico attracted US$29bn of FDI in 2020, a 14.6% decline on 2019. However, this compares with an average 45% slump in FDI across Latin America (the hardest hit region amongst developing countries).
