In brief: Inflation rises in Colombia

* Colombia’s national statistics department (Dane) has released the latest figures for the consumer price index (IPC), which showed a 1% rise in inflation in May compared to the previous month. This compares with -0.32% monthly inflation posted in May 2020. Cumulative inflation in the first five months of 2021 now stands at 3.18%, representing a 1.68 percentage point year-on-year rise compared to the same period in 2020. Price increases were highest in the food & non-alcoholic drinks category (5.37%) and the hospitality sector (0.86%). The impact of Colombia’s ongoing anti-government protests, which have seen roadblocks erected on key transport routes across the country, can also be seen in Dane’s figures. Inflation was highest in the southwest, which continues to be the site of the most intense protests; the city of Popayán (Cauca department) saw the highest regional inflation (4.5%), followed by Florencia (Caquetá; 4.02%), and Cali (Valle del Cauca; 2.77%).
