HAITI: OAS confirms deployment of delegation to facilitate dialogue

The Organization of American States (OAS) has confirmed that it will be sending a five-member delegation to Haiti “no later than mid-June” to facilitate a dialogue that would lead to “free and fair elections”. The decision reflects both ongoing concerns about the stalemate between the government led by President Jovenel Moïse and political opposition, which maintains his term ended in February [WR-21-06], and the foreign community’s insistence that general elections represent the best way out of the crisis. It comes as there is little sign of any waning of the anti-government protests which have intensified since February. Meanwhile Moïse is looking ever more isolated over his proposal to stage a referendum on a new constitution this month, ahead of the general election, a key complaint of the opposition and, increasingly, the international community.
