Roadblocks on the path to agreement in Colombia

Talks between the Colombian government led by President Iván Duque and the Comité Nacional del Paro (CNP), which represents some of the organisations that have been staging public protests, to end over a month of violent nationwide demonstrations appeared to be inching forward in late May. However, the last week has seen them go back into reverse, with new violent clashes in the city of Cali, the capital of Valle del Cauca department, further militarisation of policing, and disagreements over roadblocks on Colombia’s main highways.
