In brief: Unemployment falls in Colombia

* Colombia’s national statistics department (Dane) has released figures showing that unemployment stood at 15.1% in April, with 3.6m people out of work. This represents a 4.7 percentage point year-on-year reduction in the unemployment rate, and is the first time that unemployment has fallen since the country’s coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic began in March 2020. Dane director, Juan Daniel Oviedo, said that the decrease is largely attributable to the widespread lifting of social distancing measures designed to limit the spread of Covid-19, which were introduced in April last year and caused “the most significant reduction in the employed population in our contemporary history”. Demonstrating that employment has not fully rebounded from the lockdown measures, unemployment remains higher than the figure of 14.2% (2.9m people) recorded in March 2020, before restrictions were introduced. Oviedo also highlighted a gender divide in the unemployment figures, noting that “for every four men who recovered their job between April 2020 and April 2021, only three women achieved this”.
