Brazil & Southern Cone - May 2021

The US pays a visit

Both Argentina and Uruguay received visits from US officials in April. First the commander of the US Southern Command (Southcom), Admiral Craig Faller, travelled to the two Southern Cone countries between 6-9 April. His visit was then followed by that of Juan Gonzalez, Special Assistant to the US President and Senior Director for the Western Hemisphere at the National Security Council, and Julie Chung, Acting Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, between 11-15 April. This display of cooperation and diplomacy is a sign of attempts by US President Joe Biden to renew relations with Latin America, after his predecessor Donald Trump (2017-2021) shunned the region. But it also fits into US efforts to counter the growing presence and influence of China, which along with Russia has been engaging in vaccine diplomacy in Latin America.
