* The Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento (Conab), the logistics arm of Brazil’s agriculture ministry (Mapa), has released the results of its second survey of the 2021 coffee harvest, which confirm that Brazil’s coffee production is set to fall this year. The Conab expects this year’s crop to yield 49m sacks of processed coffee (one sack = 60kg), a 22.6% decrease on the record 63m sacks produced last year. The harvest surface is also expected to be lower than last year, with coffee crops currently covering 1.8m hectares, 3.2% less than during the previous harvest season. Coffee is cultivated according to a biennial harvest cycle, wherein a strong production year is necessarily followed by a year of lower yield harvests, but the Conab notes that
“adverse climatic conditions” are further impacting this year’s coffee crops.
