Corruption and nepotism. “As citizens we deserve a different Guatemala
. Nothing is forever. The reckoning will come sooner or later.” These words formed part of a series of scathing tweets fired off at Guatemala’s President Alejandro Giammattei by his deputy, Vice-President Guillermo Castillo, on 11 May. The two men were elected on a shared ticket in November 2019 for the conservative Vamos, the shortened version of the ruling political party whose full name, Vamos por una Guatemala Diferente, Castillo argued, now provided a bitter indictment of its performance in power.
