NICARAGUA: Opposition unity pact falls through

A deadline for Nicaragua’s disparate opposition coalitions to forge an electoral alliance ahead of the general election on 7 November came and went this week. The upshot of the failure to negotiate an alliance is that President Daniel Ortega and his ruling left-wing Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) are even more likely to entrench themselves in power for another five years.
