BRAZIL: Deadly police raid sparks condemnation
A police operation in Jacarezinho, a favela in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro city, left 28 dead last week. It is the deadliest police raid in the history of Rio state and a stark reminder of the violence and insecurity that Brazil’s favela residents face daily, and which state forces not only fail to prevent, but actively contribute to. The operation elicited widespread condemnation and calls for both a thorough investigation and a deeper change in policing and public security – but there is little sign that the country’s current political leaders are listening.
