BOLIVIA: Turning the page with Chile?
The freight train that rolled into La Paz on 11 May from the Chilean port city of Arica was the first to traverse that route since 2005 and symbolised hopes of an improvement in the historically poor relations between Bolivia and Chile. Both governments have agreed to work towards a normalisation of relations, potentially setting to one side a decades-long dispute over Bolivia’s claims to sea access, which it lost to Chile in 1884. Diplomatic relations were severed in 1962, and aside from a three-year interlude in the 1970s, the countries have shared only consular relations ever since.
