* The executive president of the Central American development bank (BCIE), Dante Mossi, has said that the BCIE is providing US$3.5m in help to countries affected by tropical storms ‘Eta’ and ‘Iota’ which made landfall in Central America in November 2020 and mainly affected Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. Mossi said this was in line with the US$2.5bn Central American programme for resilient reconstruction which was set up in 2020 by the BCIE after the storms struck with the objective of increasing the resilience and adaptation of Central American countries to climate change. According to the BCIE, over the past five years it has approved US$4.99bn in funds to assist operations aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change.
