Uruguay pushes for Mercosur flexibilisation

During a virtual summit of the foreign and economy ministers of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) on 26 April, Uruguay formally presented a proposal to flexibilise the regional trade bloc. Uruguay’s long-standing objective of relaxing the rules by which Mercosur members must trade with third parties is, however, fundamentally opposed by Argentina, and this latest meeting merely confirmed the bloc’s deep divisions.
