In brief: Economic activity still falling in Mexico

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released is latest preliminary indicator of economic activity (IOAE), which estimates that productive activity fell by 2.1% in March compared to the same month in 2020. According to an Inegi report, the IOAE data was driven by falling activity in the tertiary sector (services), which was down 3.1%, and in the secondary sector (manufacturing), which was down 0.9%. Despite the negative IOAE result, analysts have noted that this the lowest fall in activity recorded in the last 13 months, suggesting that activity levels are slowly returning to those observed before the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
