VENEZUELA: Under pressure, Maduro finds vaccine funds

Amid a worsening second wave of coronavirus (Covid-19) infections, the government of Nicolás Maduro announced that it has made an advance payment for 11.37m vaccine doses to be delivered through the Covax Facility Initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO). This follows weeks of stasis during which the government blamed international sanctions for its failure to procure vaccines, whilst the opposition accused it of wilful inaction. The government has also announced that it will produce Cuba’s Abdala vaccine candidate as a key pillar of its mass immunisation strategy, despite concerns from the medical field that the vaccine has not yet been approved.
