MEXICO: Santa Anita massacre underlines lack of protection for migrants

The killing of 19 Central American migrants by Mexican criminals has provided a painful reminder of Mexico’s failure to protect the migrants that cross its territory. The need to protect migrants from the reigning violence linked to organised crime in Mexico has been highlighted by various episodes in the past decade. The Mexican authorities had therefore come under international pressure to address this problem and prevent a repeat of such episodes. But they have clearly not taken adequate action to tackle the issue. The government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is now under scrutiny over an issue that proved damaging for preceding administrations.
