Brazil’s new police chief reignites interference concerns

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro swore in on 6 April the ministers appointed in last week’s cabinet reshuffle. Justice & Public Security Minister Anderson Torres’ first move was to announce a change in leadership in the federal police (PF) and the federal highway police (PRF). The issue of appointing a new head of the PF has been politically charged since last year, when changes to the PF leadership prompted the resignation of then-justice minister Sergio Moro (2019-2020), who accused Bolsonaro of seeking to meddle in the force [WR-20-17] – allegations which are being investigated by the PF itself.
